The Thistle Dancers is a group of talented young dancers who perform the traditional Highland dances of Scotland. Formed in 1998, they have performed extensively throughout Northern Virginia, Southern Maryland, and the Washington DC area.  The Thistle Dancers perform at many festivals throughout the year including the Earth Day celebration in Leonardtown, MD; the Frederick Celtic Festival in Frederick, MD; the Potomac Celtic Festival in Leesburg, VA; and the Scottish Heritage Festival in Alexandria, VA. These dancers have also performed at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC, at local school assemblies, nursing homes, private weddings, birthdays, and Robert Burns Celebrations and various Scottish celebrations.

Many of the members are currently competing successfully at various levels, ranging from Beginners to Premier. They also cover a great spectrum of ages from 3 years old up to adults, yet all perform with an air of professionalism and great enthusiasm. Susan W. Hyams a member of the British Association of Teachers of Dancing (BATD) and The Federation of United States Teachers and Adjudicators of Highland Dancing (FUSTA), is their founder, director and instructor.

The Thistle Pipers were added to the group in 2007, making their debut at The Potomac Celtic Festival playing during The Thistle Dancers’ set. All are individual bagpipe students of Susan W. Hyams and they frequently accompany The Thistle Dancers’ shows.
